Lower Bucks County towns will be receiving $2.7 million in grants through the Redevelopment Authority of Bucks County’s casino impact grants.

The grants are funded through impact fees generated at Parx Casino in Bensalem. The program is designed to aid contiguous municipalities impacted the most by the casino.

Municipalities contiguous to Bensalem – Bristol Borough, Bristol Township, Hulmeville Borough, Langhorne Borough, Langhorne Manor Borough, Lower Southampton Township, Middletown Township, and Penndel Borough – were able to apply funding for themselves or even on behalf of projects or organizations in other towns. The county was also able to apply for funding.

The money, which is $1.2 million less than last year due to COVID-19 impacts, provides funding for local infrastructure improvements, municipal upgrades, human services, and emergency services.

Jeff Darwak, executive director of the Redevelopment Authority of Bucks County, said that there were over $6.5 million in application requests submitted by local governments.

“This year we saw near record level requests for funding, and due to the pandemic and temporary closure of Parx Casino earlier this year, we had significantly less funds available to fulfill those requests. While we were not able to fund every project, we believe those that are funded will help local municipalities to address gaming impacts and lessen the burden on local taxpayers,” he said.

“These grants will help alleviate some of the budget pressures these municipalities are facing while providing necessary equipment, critical infrastructure improvements, and support for emergency service providers,” said Sean Schafer, chairman of the Redevelopment Authority of Bucks County.

State Sen. Tommy Tomlinson, a Republican from Bensalem, created the program more than a decade ago.

“While every municipality is struggling with the cost of COVID-19, I know that this money will be put to good use serving our community,” he said.

The program has granted close to $49 million since it started in 2008.

“We’re hopeful for a strong recovery and the Redevelopment Authority will continue to do everything we can to support our communities,” Darwak said.
